Alice Douthat Thornton's Obituary
Alice Douthat Thornton, 76, of Beaver, Pennsylvania, formerly of Huntington WV, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2026, in her home, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on September 2, 1949, in Huntington WV, Alice spent much of her life building a home in Westmoreland where family and friends were always welcome for a chat, a hot cup of coffee, and laughter. She held a special place as a second mother to many of her son’s friends who always knew her house was open if they needed someone to talk to, advice, or the occasional neighborhood wrestling match. Her home and her heart were places where everyone was always welcome.
Alice was a long-standing business owner and served the needs of her Westmoreland community through Alice Thornton Insurance. Her office was more than a place to conduct business and many of her clients visited often to talk and laugh with her. To her, the clients were more like family. This was evident in the care she showed to them in every business decision she made.
Alice was known as a gifted seamstress and artist. Family and friends were often gifted hand-sewn clothing, embroidered pieces inspired by things they loved, and artwork depicting everything from musicians to trash trucks to floral designs. Her creativity and joy of sharing knew no bounds.
Of all her accomplishments, Alice was proud of being a mother to her three sons and Mimi to her five grandchildren. Her fierce love for her family, the joy she found in them, and the memories she created with each one will continue to shape the family for many generations.
Her compassion and generosity extended beyond people. Alice was devoted to animals and rarely met a stray she couldn’t find room in her heart for. In keeping with that love, the family requests memorial donations be made to Little Victories Animal Rescue, in Ona WV, in lieu of flowers. (www.littlevictories.org)
Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Luther Lee Douthat Jr. and Virginia Alice McCown Douthat, her brothers Luther Lee Douthat III (Barbara Douthat), Robin Douthat (Katie Douthat), Gary Creighton (Martha Creighton).
She is survived by sons Michael Todd Thornton, William Shane Thornton (Sara Thornton), and Ian Grey Thornton (fiancée Katie Keller); her grandsons Connor Thornton, Shaun Thornton, Declan Thornton, Landon Thornton, and her granddaughter Harper Thornton.
The family would like to extend special gratitude to Pepper Kitchen, Alice’s lifelong friend, whose unwavering love and care made it possible for Alice to spend her final days in the comfort of her home.
Funeral Service will be held at 2 PM Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, OH. Entombment will follow the service at Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington, WV. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Condolences may be expressed to the family at ehallfuneralhome.com.
