Charles Edward Conwell's Obituary
SFC (Ret) Dea. Charles Edward Conwell, Sr., age 80 of Harlem, GA, passed on Thursday at his residence.Charles Edward Conwell, Sr. was born on February 26 to the proud parents of John Henry and Obena Conwell in Shelby County, AL where he later joined ranks with his elder brother, Jesse Bernard and elder sister Annie John. The family grew to include four sisters and three brothers. In 1949 the family relocated to Huntington, WV and one year later, moved to Burlington, OH where Charles completed his education in the South Point School District. In 1954, while working for Lambrose Dry Cleaning in Huntington, WV, he graduated from South Point High School. In 1957, he married Delores McCray of Huntington, WV and into this union, two children were born: Valerie Jean Conwell, and Charles Edward Conwell, Jr. In 1976 he married Mary Frances McNair and embraced her five children: Joann, Nancy, Barbara, Robert and Willie. Charles was a provider and a diligent worker. He was a proud veteran that served his country in the Vietnam War in the United States Army. He served as a Multichannel Communications Equipment Operator and a Communications Electronic Operations Chief during his time in the service. He retired as a Sgt. First Class, in June 30, 1983 after 23 years of service. As time went on, he decided to become an entrepreneur where he owned and managed his own shoe shop on the Base of Fort Gordon, GA. He and Frances served as shoe cobblers until retirement again. He often visited Fort Gordon where he would meet up with some of his army buddies for coffee and some good conversation. He was truly a good conversationalist, philosopher, and an unpaid comedian. He loved his family and took pleasure in going to Burlington, OH and Huntington, WV for visits with them. Charles first accepted Christ at an early age and was first baptized at the Union Baptist Church, in Hillsdale, AL. After moving to Huntington, WV, he joined the Shiloh Baptist Church where his father was pastor. Later the family moved to Burlington, OH where Charles joined the Burlington Baptist Church. In later years, the family joined the Glorious Church of God in Christ in Burlington, OH where Charles served as Superintendent of the Sunday school, Sunday school teacher and drummer. ter serving in the Armed Forces he later joined Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Harlem, GA where he was a faithful deacon, superintendent of Sunday school, Sunday school teacher, and a faithful loyal member. s wife Mary Frances preceded him in death in 2006 and his oldest sister, Anne John Conwell Anderson passed away 2011. Charles leaves the memories of a celebrated life to his daughter: Valerie Conwell-Hughes (Charles), his son: Charles Edward Conwell Jr, his brothers: Jesse Bernard Conwell ( Loretta Maxine), Deotis Conwell (Dorsey Ann), his sisters: Imogene Conwell Brydie, Barbara Conwell Colston and Gloristine Conwell Lindsay. He also leaves celebrated memories to his step children: Joann Govinninni, Nancy Chapman (Edward), Barbara Tate, Robert Bradshaw, Willie Smith and a host of nieces, nephews and many step grandchildren. March 31, 2016 Charles departed this life as a strong soldier needing to celebrate eternal rest in the presence of God.
