David L. Callicoat's Obituary
David L. Callicoat of Chesapeake, Ohio, born on October 22, 1952, passed away on March 6, 2026, at the age of 73. He was the son of the late James L. and Eva Wyant Callicoat. David is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kathy Louise Maynard Callicoat; one very special son, John David, both of Chesapeake, Ohio; his lovable dogs, Bentley and Lulu, and mother-in-law, Janet Maynard. David was a schoolteacher for the Chesapeake Union Exempted Village Schools where he taught high school Physical Science, Chemistry, and Physics from 1975 until his retirement in 1996. During this time, he served on the Lawrence County Schools Committee for revising the science curriculum for grades K–12. He was also a co-author of a State of Ohio Scholastic Aptitude Test for General Science. David was selected as Science Teacher of the Year by the Marshall University School of Medicine. David retired from teaching after 21 years of service at Chesapeake High School. During his time at Chesapeake High School, David coached the Varsity Golf Team for 19 years. Over that period of time, he compiled a record of 490 wins, 359 losses, and 3 ties. His teams won 10 Ohio Valley Conference golf championships. As a result, he was named the conference Coach of the Year, 10 times. He coached 5 conference individual champions as well as 32 All-conference team members. Other accomplishments for teams he coached were 97 conference victories, 58 consecutive home course wins, 57 consecutive regular season wins and 7 (1975–1981) consecutive conference championships. On the state level, he coached one individual state champion who went on to play college golf at Ohio University and Marshall University. Another member of his team went on to play for the Lady Buckeyes of Ohio State University. She went on to become an LPGA teaching professional. David was inducted into the Chesapeake Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Ohio State High School Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2017. After retirement from teaching, David obtained his Ordained Bishop license from the Church of God, Cleveland, TN. He also accepted a full-time position with Jefferson Avenue Church of God in Huntington, WV, where he was a member since 1981. During this time, he worked with many fine people and forged many lasting friendships. His position was Administrator of the church and the Minister of Christian Education. He was a credentialed minister in the Church of God until his passing. After the passing of his mother, David resigned his position at the church to allow more time to care for his ailing father. A funeral service will be held at 2 P.M. Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, OH, with Pastor Greg Tomlinson, officiating. Entombment will follow at Rome Cemetery in Proctorville, OH. Kathy and John David will meet family and friends from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
