Hobert D Black

Hobert Douglas Black, of Huntington, WV, born February 25, 1939, passed from this life to the next on April 29, 2025, after a brief, hard fought Illness. He was the son of the late Sylvia Chinn and Ty Birtias Black. He was preceded in death by siblings Alannia F. Cooper, Aaron B. Black, Mary V. Hodge, Jack L. Black; son James Douglas Black, grandson James Douglas Walz, and wife Nancy B. Black. Left to cherish his memory are his son Robert Douglas Black of Huntington, a daughter Erin Ricard Black-Bair and Jeramey of Chesapeake, Ohio. Grandchildren, Brian, Amber, Jessie, Brody, Lyric, and Abram as well as many great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. He also leaves behind siblings, whom he loved fiercely and protected mightily- Betty Smith of Glenwood, WV., Al (Joan) Black of Proctorville Ohio, and Jean Maynard of Proctorville, Ohio as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews. Hobert was a jack of all trades, master of most. He proudly served in both the United States Army and Navy. He retired from the plumbers and pipefitters Union. Hobert was the owner of Black’s Recycling Center in Huntington’s west end for many years. He was an avid reader and had accumulated hundreds of books. He was never seen without a well-loved Western in his hand. Hobert collected elephants, and while no one can recall why, everyone remembered to bring him one from all their travels. So, as his collection of friends grew, so did his collection of elephants. When he was younger, he loved jaunting across the country mining for gemstones and making his own beautiful jewelry. He was skilled at the game of poker and had many friends with whom he shared this hobby. Hobert also enjoyed going to auctions, out to dinner, and to a good riverboat casino. His ability to see treasure when everyone else saw junk was truly unmatched. The world will seem quieter without the sound of Hobert’s beautiful whistling. Friends may gather at Hall Funeral Home to share memories and pay their respects on Saturday May 3, 2025, from 10-11, with service following at 11 am. Burial will follow at Chinn-Black cemetery in Lavalette, WV. The family would like to thank all the compassionate caregivers and staff at The Hospice House of Huntington for their tremendous love and care.
