Howard T. “Terry” Spears

Howard T. Spears, affectionately known as “Terry,” 85, of Proctorville, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on May 23, 2025. He was the oldest of five children born in Huntington, WV to the late Harold and Elizabeth Spears. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lynda, and one brother, Daniel.
He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly K. Spears; three sons, Leslie Spears (Denice), David Spears—both of Huntington, WV—and Kaiden Spears, at home; and stepchildren Heather (Justin), Daniel, and Anthony. He is also survived by two brothers, Dr. H. Keith Spears (Rita) of Campbellsville, Kentucky, and Dr. Timothy M. Spears (Mimi) of Charleston, West Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret, and their son, Shawn, as well as his second wife, Effie Mae.
Terry’s legacy lives on through his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, whose lives and memories span across North America and into Mexico.
Terry came of age as a spirited post-World War II teenager in the vibrant 1950s, where he followed in his father’s footsteps developed a deep appreciation for mechanics, particularly automobiles, learning to drive in a Model A Ford in the backyard of his parents’ restaurant, The Viking Lunch, in Fort Gay, WV. He went on to study at Marshall University and began his professional career in plastics manufacturing in Cleveland, OH, working for a company that helped produce some of the earliest hula hoops—a hallmark of American innovation and fun.
His passion for science and innovation led him to a successful and respected career as a professional chemist with Novamont Corporation in Kenova, West Virginia, where he contributed four decades of dedicated service.
Terry was also an ambitious entrepreneur. He ventured into truck tire manufacturing and launched the region’s first mobile truck wash service for commercial vehicles, always seeking creative ways to apply his skills and business insight.
Outside of work, Terry was full of energy and curiosity. He enjoyed high-powered cars and motorcycles, often riding with his close friend, Jerry Strickler, and taking to the open road in his RV, traveling across the United States. He also found joy in constructing unique residential projects, including custom garages and outdoor relaxation spaces—projects that reflected both his craftsmanship and his imaginative spirit.
Howard T. “Terry” Spears will be laid to rest at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Barboursville, WV on Thursday, June 12, 2025 at 12 noon. Arrangements are being handled by Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville.
In lieu of flowers, it was Terry’s wish that donations be made to Hospice of Huntington.
Terry will be remembered for his inventive mind, unwavering work ethic, and boundless love for family and life. He leaves behind a legacy not only in his professional accomplishments but in the hearts of those who loved him.
