James Hannaman's Obituary
James Lloyd “Jim” Hannaman, of Parkersburg, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 19, 2025. He was 86 years old. Jim is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Chris Dennis; his granddaughters, Stephanie Kunze and Sabrina Dennis-Anderson; and his great-granddaughters, Taylor, and Lauren Kunze. He is also survived by his sister, Bobette Grimm; niece, Chana Odom, her husband Tim, and their son Wesley.
After graduating high school, Jim served proudly in the United States Air Force. His dedication to helping others led him to become a registered nurse, earning his degree from Marshall University. He went on to specialize in anesthesia at the University of Pittsburgh, launching a career in medicine that would span decades and take him all over the world. Jim’s work took him to Samoa and Hawaii, where he not only practiced medicine but also embraced new cultures and ways of life. Eventually, he returned to the United States, continuing his career until retiring in 2006. True to his lifelong love of learning, Jim earned his Ph.D. at the age of 70, laughing that he was the oldest person in the program.
Outside of work, Dad had a passion for sailing and the sea. He traveled widely, often by boat, and loved discovering new places. At home, he was a quiet soul who enjoyed reading and listening to music. He was a gentle man, thoughtful, steady, and deeply kind. His life was full of adventure, love, and quiet wisdom, and those who knew him are better for it.
Some of our most cherished memories with Dad were made during summers and holidays–backyard cookouts and the simple joy of just being together. With his snowy white beard and kind eyes, he looked so much like Santa Claus that children were convinced he was the real thing. He never had to put on a costume–his warmth and gentle presence spoke for itself.
Dad was a quiet, steady presence–deeply kind, thoughtful, and grounded. He never asked for attention, and his life was rich with adventure, filled with love, and guided by a quiet wisdom that left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
We’ll carry his spirit with us always, in the stories he told, the values he lived by, and the love he gave so freely. May your soul find rest and new horizons, Dad. Our love goes with you. Condolences may be expressed at schneiderhallfuneralhome.com
