Dr. John Patrick Jackson's Obituary
Dr. John Patrick Jackson, 70, of Huntington, West Virginia departed this life and was escorted into paradise on angels' wings Saturday, May 30th, 2020. He was born February 11th, 1950 in Pasadena, California to the late Beulah Mae Nelson and Horace Jackson, Sr. In his early childhood years, he attended Saint Peter Claver; where he served as an altar boy. As an adult, he joined the Glorius Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Martha Johnson. He sang in the choir, was a member of the usher board, and an all-around handyman. Patrick entered the United States Army in November of 1969 and was honorably discharged in September of 1972. He was also served in the Army and Navy Reserves. He was employed by the Huntington Housing Authority as a mechanic for over 20 years before retiring in 2005. Patrick loved dogs, chess, and fishing. In addition to being one of the best chess players around, he loved to play pool. Patrick’s love in life was Tae Kwon Do. He practiced from 1973 until 2011, only stopping due to the amputation of his leg that year. After he stopped practicing Tae Kwon Do, Patrick still tried to reach out to his student to continue as a teacher. Patrick earned his first-degree black belt in 1979 and the second in 1982. He competed in over 100 regional and local tournaments. He won three divisions in three different weight classes. He also trained more than 700 students. As a free community service, Patrick also organized Tae Kwon Do training for residents in public housing including those that were physically and mentally impaired. Additionally, Patrick was the organizer of a Drug and Alcohol-Free Community Basketball Program that served the city of Huntington for five years. Patrick had numerous awards, accolades, and trophies in mixed martial arts. He received an honorary doctorate in Martial Arts Philosophy and Martial Arts Science from the University of Asian Martial Arts. Patrick leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 34 years, Marcella Brandon-Jackson; two step-children, Ezra Cooley and Kam Brandon; three grandchildren, Dylan and Tatiana Mickles and Madison Baxter; two brothers: Jackie (Valarie) Jackson and David Jackson; one sister, Allison (Ben) Harris; Godsons Jarrod and Joshua Lapsley. A special friend Dr. Dallas Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, sisters- and brothers-in-law, other relatives, and friends. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2020 at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, Ohio with Bishop Samuel Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Donel Kinnard Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar, WV. Visitation will be held 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2020 at the funeral home.
