Leo Francis Van Steenberg 1939 - 2016
Leo Francis Van Steenberg, 77, of Chesapeake, Ohio passed away Monday, December 5, 2016 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, WV. He was born July 21, 1939 in Jasper, MN to the late Emil F. and Anna Mary Hemmer Van Steenberg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Marcia Jean; and three sisters Ginger Hagan, Marie Flannery and Marcia Jean Van Steenberg. Leo graduated from high school in Gary, SD. He worked as a farm hand, gas station attendant, worked in a saw mill and served in the Army from 1958-1962, before he settled in the Huntington area as a mechanic at Heiners Bakery then becoming a self-employed Contractor in the mechanical industry from which he retired. He attended Tri-State Worship Center in South Point, Ohio. He is survived by his wife Patricia Van Steenberg of Chesapeake, Ohio; sons Stephen Van Steenberg and his wife Cheryl of South Point, Ohio, Michael Van Steenberg and his wife Amy of Huntington, WV and Mark Van Steenberg of Chesapeake, Ohio; grandchildren Joshua Smith, Amanda Sagraves, Trisha Van Steenberg, Ryan Van Steenberg, Ethan Van Steenberg, Evan Van Steenberg and Daniel Van Steenberg; great grandchildren Peyton and Ryleigh Sagraves; one brother Gustav Van Steenberg of San Antonio, TX; five sisters Ramona Kelley of Hamburg, AK, Lila Bulygo of Bloomington, MN, Monica Koeppen of Milford, IA, Rita Dwinell of Henderson, NV and Barbara McCarty of Clear Lake, SD; sisters-in-law Jean Price of Madison, WV, Betty Watson of Huntington, WV, Barbara Wyant of Chesapeake, Ohio and Judy Adkins of Detroit, MI; a very special niece Heather Hensley as well as many other nieces and nephews; and a very special pet Twinkie. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday December 12, 2016 at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery, Greenup, KY with Pastor Terry Wagner officiating. Visitation will be held 12 noon to 1 p.m. Monday December 12, 2016 at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, Ohio. The family would like to send a special thank you to Tri-State Worship Center, Burlington Wesleyan Independent Church and the many friends and neighbors for all of their love and support during this trying time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Wounded Warriors Project or The American Cancer Society.
