Lizabethe "Libby" Mayo

Lizabethe Anne Mayo (Libby), a devoted wife, beloved mother, cherished Mimsy, and steadfast servant of Christ, entered into the loving arms of her Savior on January 24th, 2025. Her life was a beautiful testament to love, faith, and service, and her legacy will continue to inspire those who knew and loved her. Libby was born on February 22nd, 1936, in Wayne County, WV to parents Wanita (Scaggs) and Everett Stephens. She graduated as salutatorian from Vinson High School in 1953, where she excelled academically and formed lifelong friendships. She married her high school sweetheart, Jimmie Dale Mayo, on January 22nd, 1954, and together they built a life rooted in faith, love, and devotion. They shared a joyful and loving marriage of 56yrs until his passing in March 2010. Professionally, Libby earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in speech pathology from Marshall University and found her calling as a school speech pathologist. She was employed by Dawson Bryant for eight years and then worked for seventeen years as Coordinator of Related Services for Pilasco Ross until her retirement. She poured her heart into her work, leaving a lasting and meaningful impact on countless students and colleagues. Her professional accomplishments reflected her commitment to nurturing and guiding others, a theme that carried over into every aspect of her life. Libby's family was her greatest treasure. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Mayo; her parents, Wanita and Everett Stephens; and her lifelong friends, Jack and Linda Dawson. She is survived by her sister, Evelyne (Birt) Lloyd; her loving children, Brent (Julie) Mayo and Jaime (Rob) Carmichael; her grandchildren, Brandon Keeney, Britani Ledbetter, Sarah (Matthew) Walker, and Anna Mayo; one great-grandchild, Payton Keeney; and her devoted friend of 70 years, Jean Sterner. Libby took immense pride in their lives and accomplishments, offering her steadfast love and support at every turn. Anchored in her steadfast faith, Libby lived her life as a reflection of God’s grace and love. She was a devoted member of the Guyandotte Church of Christ for the last 20 years and a longtime member of Westmoreland Church of Christ prior to that. Whether tending her flower beds, baking treats for friends and family, or decorating the church, Libby brought beauty and joy to all she encountered. Truly, she exemplified the Proverbs 31 woman, living a life of virtue, faith, and selflessness. Her family and friends will forever remember her as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, a faithful believer, and a source of strength and joy. Her family finds comfort in the assurance that she has heard the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21). A service celebrating Libby’s life will be held at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory in Proctorville, Ohio, on Friday, January 31st, where all are welcome to honor her memory and rejoice in the knowledge that she is now at peace with her Lord. Visitation will take place from 12-2 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2 PM. Entombment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington, WV.
