Nancy L Coffman's Obituary
Nancy L. Coffman, 88 of Chesapeake, OH, went to be with the Lord at her home on December 14, 2024. A Celebration of Life service will be held in her honor at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at Harmony Missionary Baptist Church, 12253 State Route 243 in Getaway, Ohio. Pastor Harold Hamlin and Pastor Brian Schneider will be officiating.
Nancy was born on March 5, 1936, in Newtown, PA, the youngest daughter of ten children of George & Stella Shuppe. She graduated from Point Marion High School, worked at Sterling Faucet for four years before deciding to go into Nursing. As a member of the Class of ‘61 at Monongalia General Hospital School of Nursing she earned her RN degree. During this time, she began dating a WVU dental student. She married Dr. Damon Coffman on May 23, 1961. They were married for 52 years until his death in 2013. Nancy continued her nursing career first at Fort Polk, then Thomas Memorial Hospital, and lastly at Cabell Huntington Hospital as an IC Burn Unit nurse.
1974 was Nancy & Damon’s last move to their beautiful farm where she enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, and escaping to her woods to enjoy the beauty of nature during warm weather and reading books or crocheting when cold outside. She also became a member at Getaway UMC where she had many lifelong friends. Traveling was a huge part of her joy - she & Damon enjoyed spending winters in Foley AL visiting their son & his family, then they would head to Arizona which she called her ‘home away from home’. In the later years she settled for gardening her ‘porch tomatoes’ and one last flowerbed that kept her busy all summer. She was not happy unless she could get her hands in the dirt.
As a Mom she was fierce in protecting her kids & was quick to mother their friends who came into the house. As a loving aunt, she enjoyed her nephews & nieces and even had several who came to stay for the summer. Many many memories were made during those years. As a Grandma she loved her grandchildren, spending time with each and making new memories by doing special things like roasting marshmallows over a campfire, baking together, gardening, or just being at a performance. She could be so funny & be the life of the party, yet she could be quite cantankerous. Everyone who knew her either loved her or stayed out of her way. That is what made her so special. As one niece said, ‘She was a Force of Nature in the best of ways’.
Nancy is survived by her daughter & son-in-law, Jeanne & Brian Schneider and her granddaughter Brianna & husband Jonathan Heffner, all of Chesapeake, OH; another granddaughter Amanda (Nathan) Keys, two grandsons, Andrew Coffman & Justin Coffman, and one great-granddaughter, all of Sweet Water, TN. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, a bunch of nieces, nephews, and special neighbors. Plus, her special cat “Sami” who was her roommate & kept her company over the past three years. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Damon E. Coffman, and her son Damon “Daimie” E. Coffman II.
