Roland Anderson Parsley's Obituary
Roland A. Parsley, 87, of Huntington, West Virginia, died on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at the Emogene Dolin Hospice House after a long illness. He was surrounded by his family and friends. A son of the late Anna and Hiram Parsley, Roland was born in Man, West Virginia (Logan County). He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Viola Mendez Parsley, his son Sebastian Parsley (Meghan Elkins), and brothers Conley and Hiram Parsley.After graduating from Man High School in 1954, he earned a Business Administration degree from Marshall University. Roland served as the business manager for Appalachian Regional Hospitals and St. Mary's Hospital before venturing out on his own to be an actuarial consultant. He worked for the United Food & Commercial Workers Local #347 which later merged with Local #400 in 2007. He retired in 2010.In his younger years, Roland beat polio and took to the dance floor, even dancing out of a cast once. The years passed, his eyesight faded, and Roland had to slow down, but he kept entertaining. He found comfort in his music collection and spent hours talking to his friends on the telephone. As he faced his final days, Roland charmed all the nurses and staff at the hospital and hospice with jokes and sociability. The family wishes to express gratitude for the love and support provided by those who care for Roland at HIMG, Retina Consultants, St. Mary's, and the Hospice House.In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to the March of Dimes or Hospice of Huntington. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a funeral mass following at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (2015 Adams Ave) in Huntington on Saturday, October 28. As per his wishes, his family will be hosting one last celebration to share in the memory of Roland's life at 2:00 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus in Huntington.
