Wanda Lee Gillette, 91, of Proctorville, Ohio passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 25, 2016 at The Village of Riverview, Barboursville, WV. She was born January 1, 1925 daughter of the late John David Stanley and Ida Miller Stanley. Her mother died when she six years old. Her father later remarried, Virginia Robinson, who became a loving step mother to Wanda and her siblings. Rose Stanley, Wanda’s grandmother was very special in her life. She married Donald Gillette on April 7, 1944. Wanda is survived by her son, Steve Gillette (Shona) of Montana and a daughter Donna Gillette of Florida; two grandsons Tyler Gillette and Bret McCartney; sisters-in-law Mary Evelyn Hunt and Roberta Erickson; along with many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Donald; her brother Johnie Stanley and his wife Patty; her sister Lyndell Nuendorf Flescher and her husband, Chuck. Wanda graduated from Rome High School in 1941. She worked at Anderson Newcomb in the accounting office. After her marriage to Donald, they built a new home east of Proctorville and enjoyed raising their family on the Gillette Family Farm. Wanda was well known in the area for her dedication to community service. Wanda joined the Proctorville Woman’s Club at 18 years of age and was a lifetime member at the time of her death. She held many offices and was elected as District President twice. Wanda was nominated by the Woman’s Club and went on to win the Mrs. Ohio competition in 1962. She volunteered with Fairland Schools as PTA President, and eventually worked in the school district office as a secretary until she retired. Wanda enjoyed leading water aerobics at the Huntington YMCA, where she was a member. She made many special friendships with that group. She became a member of Highlawn Baptist Church in Huntington in November, 1974 where she loved singing in the choir. She shared duties in the church serving on many committees and boards. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, Ohio with Dr. David Jicka officiating. Burial will follow in Rome Cemetery, Proctorville, Ohio. There will be a celebration of life luncheon held at the Proctorville V.F.W. Post 6878 following the service. Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, January 2, 2017 at the funeral home. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff at The Village of Riverview in Barboursville, WV for the loving care they provided to Wanda, and to all the friends who visited her and shared their time and kindness to her.
