Charles R Powers' Obituary
Charles (Charlie) Powers, 81, of Huntington, WV passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, April 16, 2026. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, April 29, with Pastor Trent Eastman officiating at New Baptist Church, 610 28th Street, Huntington, WV followed by burial at Oaklawn Cemetery on East Pea Ridge Road in Pea Ridge, WV. The family will be present to greet friends and loved ones from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Tuesday, April 28, at Hall Funeral Home, 625 OH-775, Proctorville, OH 45669. Charles was born in 1944 in Detroit, MI, the oldest of the two children of Benjamin and Wilma Powers (Mullins). Charles was raised with his sister, by his mother and maternal grandparents, Richard and Thelma Mullins in Falmouth, KY. Charles had a half-sister Betty Jean Preston and a half-brother Benjamin Roderick Powers, who preceded him death. He was also preceded in death by his mother, father, and grandparents. Charles was married to Joy Powers (Stokes), of Fort Thomas, KY, for 34 years. They raised two children in Proctorville, OH and moved to Huntington when their children graduated high school. Charles’ best friend for the last decade of his life was Cynthia Kirk of Huntington, WV. Charles’ family includes his son Matthew Powers, daughter-in-law Danielle and their 6 children, Emma, Ethan (DJ), Elizabeth, Abigail (Abby), Lucious (Luke), and Colton. Charles’ family also includes his daughter, Rachel, and son-in-law Kam Woods; his younger sister, Barbara Alice Powers of Cincinnati, Ohio; and two nieces Lauren Wolfe and Erica Wolfe. Charles loved Jesus and lived his life in a way that truly reflected his love. Charles loved his community. He was active in numerous roles throughout the greater Huntington area. He was an active volunteer with the Good News Club at a local elementary for over 10 years and served on the board of directors. He shared stories about his volunteer time with his children and would tell stories about making homemade ice cream for the children there. He still regularly baked dozens of cinnamon rolls to provide for the needy on Saturday mornings in the community. He passed away with four dozen rolls ready to bake in the fridge. He cherished his local Tuesday men’s Bible study group and attended regularly. He loved his family and served as a constant source of support, encouragement, and prayer for them. Charles was a group health and life insurance agent and enjoyed his work. He loved meeting people and relished packing large Christmas fruit baskets for local businesses, always making sure to place a bunch of bananas on the very top. Charles opened Powers Insurance in 1984 and owned his office building on 6th Avenue for over 30 years. He served as the President of the Huntington Chapter of the American Society of CLU and ChFC from 1994 to 1995. He also served as the President of the Huntington Chapter of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors from 2012-2013. He primarily worked with the Principal Financial Group and was the leading producer for the Columbus, OH branch for 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992 and 1993, a testament to his hard work. Charles worked hard to provide for his family. He began his life of hard work at the age of 8 when he delivered the Cincinnati Gazette newspaper on his bicycle in Falmouth, KY. He upgraded to a Harley Davidson at the age of 12 and kept delivering papers. He loved the Cincinnati Reds as a child and often shared stories of attending Reds games at Crosley Field with all the other paper boys. After graduating from Falmouth High School in 1963, he joined the United States Army and was Honorably Discharged in 1969 after achieving the Rank of Sergeant. Charles will be mourned and missed by all who knew him. He loved Jesus, his family and his friends. His loss will be felt by many for years to come.
