I met Mrs. Scott as my primary school principal at Miller Elementary. I've always respected and looked up to her. I can still remember the distinct sound of her heels clicking in the hallway announcing her arrival to your classroom. Students would sit up a little straighter and make sure they were paying attention when they heard those heels! Mrs. Scott was also gracious. My birthday was also October 30th, and I recall in second grade the entire school gathering on the playground to sing happy birthday to her. Because someone mentioned it was also my birthday, Mrs. Scott invited me to stand with her as the school sang to us - that was 30 years ago and I don't think I'll ever forget that generosity. As I graduated Miller, I continued to keep in touch with Mrs. Scott. She attended my college send-off party before I left for Vanderbilt, as well as my wedding and my wife's baby shower for our first daughter. Mrs. Scott became family and someone who I cherished and admired growing up in Huntington, WV. I loved her and will miss her. May God bless her family and may others continue to follow the legacy she left behind.
