Jerry Pittman's Obituary
Garland “Jerry” Pittman, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, completed his earthly journey on Sunday, April 6, 2025. Jerry was born to Kelt and Rosa Pittman in Mingo County, WV. After moving to Cabell County, WV, where he attended Huntington East High School and Vo-Tech, he met and developed a spark for Delores Saunders, a Vinson High School student. That spark grew into a flame that lasted more than 69 years.
In addition to his parents, Jerry had three siblings who preceded him in death: John Pittman (his hero), Rosella Montgomery, and Madeline McMahon; one son, Greg, and two grandchildren Micah and Mason. He was a father to Terri (Dennis) Rine, Greg (Cheri) Pittman, Lori (Mel) Sansom and Matthew (Tina) Pittman.
Because of the great number of offspring, Mr. Pittman often made various references about his family as the Children of Israel. He was the grandfather to Casey (Kellie) Rine, Micah Rine, Erin (Anthony) Carver, Andrew (Heather) Pittman, Emily (Jordan) Taylor, Sydni Sansom, Madison (Hayden) Lowe, Mason Pittman, Adam (McKenzie) Gantt, Hayden Pittman, Allison (Matthew) Skarbinski, and Hunter and Hannah Pittman. He was the great-grandfather to Isaac and Ivy Rine, Levi and Lexi Carver, Titus and Trinity Jones, Easton and Davis Taylor, Juniper Garrett, Rebecca and James Pittman, Penelope Gantt, Elam and Able Lowe.
Jerry began a long work career stuffing the “funny pages” in the Sunday Newspaper and then home delivering the daily morning and evening papers. After working several jobs, he achieved what he said was a dream job with the International Nickel Company, where he was a welding and research engineer for more than 30 years. At the same time, he was a part time welding instructor at the Cabell County Career Center. He was known to often excitedly say, “I’m just a country boy who can weld. I can’t believe they pay me to do this!”
Post retirement, because of his many welding accolades, he continued teaching and consulting at various businesses in West Virginia and Kentucky. Additionally, he certified beginning welders.
Jerry loved and provided for his family, was a faithful husband, a hard worker, and made a lot of friends. For many years, he had a personal phone ministry reaching out to friends, family, and former colleagues to check in and offer encouragement. Above all, he loved Jesus. It was this love that fueled his faithfulness in prayer and meeting with likeminded believers. His love for Jesus was the factor in being a good employee. It was this love that became of foundation on which the family was built.
